Rewriting the Story of Women’s Health with Interventional Radiology

When it comes to treating complex women’s health issues, surgery isn’t the only option. In fact, some of the most meaningful advances in recent years have come from a specialty many people still haven’t heard of: Interventional Radiology (IR).

“Interventional Radiology is a field of medicine that uses image guidance to perform minimally invasive procedures,” says Ande DeMarco, PA-C with Vascular Interventional Specialists (VIS) of CORA. “That means we can accomplish a tremendous amount therapeutically—without large incisions or extended recovery time.”

Why IR Matters for Women

IR has become a game-changer for women dealing with pelvic pain, heavy cycles, or conditions like uterine fibroids and pelvic congestion syndrome. These are issues that can significantly impact daily life, yet often go untreated—or misunderstood.

“I think it’s important to normalize the conversation around pelvic pain,” says DeMarco. “As women, we tolerate a lot, especially as mothers, spouses, and businesswomen. But just because symptoms are common doesn’t mean they’re normal.”

For patients seeking relief without major surgery, interventional radiology offers powerful, uterus-sparing options.

A Uterus-Sparing Option for Fibroids

One standout treatment offered at VIS of CORA is Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)—a minimally invasive procedure that targets fibroids at the source.

“Uterine fibroids are benign growths that can cause heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, or even infertility,” explains DeMarco. “At our outpatient clinic, we perform UFE by using microscopic beads to block blood flow to the fibroids. With no blood supply, the fibroids shrink over time and symptoms improve.”

The entire procedure is done under light sedation, not general anesthesia, and most women return to their regular activities far sooner than they would after a hysterectomy. Patients are also encouraged to participate in pelvic floor physical therapy as part of their long-term care plan.
